Turns out that of the
20 million plus songs (and duplicates and duplicates of duplicates) on free and subscription streaming music service, Spotify,* about
4 million — roughly 20%, a fifth of the songs —
have never been streamed.
Forgotify aims to fix that — whittling it down one unheard song at a time — by dishing up a randomly selected, unheard track at at ime from that vast pool.**
And we aim to help them. Here at the Forgotify Files, we’ll be giving a quick write-up to the music we find, one after another. That said, we reserve the right to pass quickly over any truly forgettable music we find. For the record, we’ve already listened to about 12 artists (and maybe a 100-120 tracks) from Forgotify — and we’ve favorited 4 of them in our own subscription service.
* We honestly have some misgivings about Spotify; they have a reputation for bargaining hard with indie labels while cutting sweetheart deals with the big dogs of pop. Still, that’s the music biz, eh? At any rate, they are likely the most used on-demand stream service — they emphasize their ad-driven ‘free’ membership — and that can provide valuable insight into the state of online music listening habits. But we generally try to give alternative links as well.
** It opens the Spotify web browser in another tab or window if you don’t already have Spotify running. (I believe you’ll need to be signed in; basic, ad-driven accounts are free.)
